old improved launches to which bridges had been fitted. of

these 23 launches 14 have now been returned, 4 of these being

the new launches.

The total capital expended in the business of boats,

piers, repairs, o. during the 17 years the combination has

been running the ferry is upwards of $450,000.00.

SAM SHUI PO SERVICE.

In 1904 the Chee Wo Company and the Tack On Company (who

are now members of the present combination but at that time

were running independently) joined together and each Company

contributed one launch to run the Sham Shui Po service at

intervals of thirty minutes at a fare of four cents. They

ran from a pier lying near Gilman's Bazaar which was erected

by them to the Public Wharf in front of Tai Kung Temple.

Prior to this the same parties had run an irregular

service to Sam Shui Po but from this date it run regularly,

no one else had ever run any service to Sam Shui Po regular,

or irregular. After these two parties joined the combination

they continued to rum the Sam Shui Po service independently

save that, if the launches devoted to it had to be laid up

for any purpose, the combination supplied launches and took

the fare, until the launches so laid up were in commission

again.

In 1914 the Chee Wo Company went bankrupt and their

business was purchased by the Tung Hing (another member of

the combination) who continued to run the Sam Shui Po service

in conjunction with the Tack On Company on the same lines as

before, In 1916 the fare was increased to five cents. In

the beginning of 1917 the Sze Yeuk Company put two small

launches (one belonging to them, one hired by them) in the

Sam Shui Po service in opposition at a fare of three cents.

They ran from Pottinger Street Wharf (Government) to the harf
